Best of Utah: Poor sandhi, bad timing and a lazy habit: Improving Spanish pronunciation in native English speakers

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Do you or your students still sound like Gringos? This session will define and practice three stubborn phonological phenomena that remain troublesome in the speech patterns of even Advanced level speakers of Spanish. These are:
1) synaloepha,
2) syllabic rhythm, and
3) post-tonic vowel reduction.
These three principles will be defined and recorded examples of both native like and non-native use will be shared. Participants will practice entertaining exercises they can use with their students to improve pronunciation.

Tom Mathews

Professor of Spanish, Weber State University
I have taught Spanish language, linguistics and pedagogy at the university level for 27 years. Before that I taught junior high school Spanish and lower-division Spanish while I was a graduate student. | One of my favorite classes to teach is Phonetics and Phonology; this presentation is based on some of the insights I have gained in that class.
